Laser Hair removal

Light is absorbed by the melanin (the pigment in the hair follicle). The light energy heats the pigment and effectively destroys the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding cell. The laser is placed on the skin and a short pulse of light is released, which target many follicles simultaneously. The applicator is then moved to the neighbouring area of the skin and the process is repeated until the entire area is covered. A course of laser treatments is usually required at 4 - 8 weekly intervals to follow the hair growth cycle. Treatment will leave your skin feeling smooth, soft and free from painful in-growing hairs.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is Hair-removal laser safe?

Our Pewdee Clinic takes the safety of our patients very seriously, all of our practitioners, who are extremely experienced at performing Hair-removal laser procedures; perform a melanin test on the area before each treatment to ensure the area is safe to treat by using the right settings and proper parameters for each and every case.

What can I expect during my Hair-removal laser treatment?

Hair-removal laser machines use focused light to penetrate the epidermis of the skin and target the underlying hair. The hair's pigment absorbs the light and is destroyed, meaning it is instantly removed and further growth is hindered, leaving the skin with a smooth appearance.

Hair-removal laser treatments take from ten minutes to approximately forty minutes, depending on the area being treated

Does Hair-removal laser hurt?

Some lasers such as Luminis I (LME), are less painful that Coolglide or Lightsheer. Pain varies from person to person. Most patients only experiences mid pains. Some patients experience slightly more, but very bearable pain; it can be used to remove hair even in sensitive areas, such as the face or bikini line, as well as from your back, tummy or chest.

What are the most common areas treated?

At Pewdee Skin & Laser Clinic,  we treat nearly every part of the body for permanent laser hair reduction but the most common areas are:

What is the difference between electrolysis and Laser Hair Reduction?

Electrolysis uses a needle shaped electrode or metal probe against the skin to destroy the hair. Hair-removal laser machines use focused light to penetrate the epidermis of the skin and target the underlying hair. The hair's pigment absorbs the light and is destroyed, meaning it is instantly removed and further growth is hindered, leaving the skin with a smooth appearance. Hair-removal laser, unlike electrolysis, does not touch the skin and is regarded by many as the most effective and least painful method to treat unwanted hair.

What happens after my permanent hair reduction treatment? Is there down-time or side effects?

There is very little if any recovery time, though you may have some redness following a treatment, this may last between one and eight hours. For 24 hours after your treatment you should avoid heat treatments, saunas and direct sun exposure, we recommend using sun block on exposed areas. You should allow around 14-20 days for the hairs to fall out following your treatments.

We know from experience that a number of treatments are required over a period of at least 12 months for any area treated, this will vary between patients.

When will I see the results?

You will see noticeable results after your first treatment. The laser can destroy about 20-30% of hair follicle after each treatment. After each treatment, you will have to wait until the remaining hair grows back to a certain level until you can receive the next session of treatment. This process can be repeated until you receive a satisfying results.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments needed will vary between patients depending on skin color, hair color, texture and density, are, medical history, the area being treated and how the patient responds to treatments. For the best results we recommend you complete the full course, which will be about 5-10 times.

LME or Hair-removal laser?

It's common to think that they are the same. Especially as LME is often referred to as LME Hair-removal laser. They are actually very different, and at our Hair-removal laser Clinic we use the ND:YAG laser, the Intense Pulsed Light (LME) system and Diode Laser.

The benfit of Long pulse Nd:YAG lasers are that they can be used on all skin types even tanned skin, allowing treatment of a wider patient base than many other systems. They even allow us to offer treatments to the often difficult-to-treat finer hairs that are left by other systems after a number of treatments.

IMPORTANT: The choice of LME Hair Removal or Hair-removal laser depends on your individual skin and hair type. What is important for you to know is we will select the machine best for individual requirement, and that all of our lasers have the US or Europe FDA approval.

LME Hair Removal

How Does LME Hair Removal Work

LME works by emitting a band of light that passes through the skin and is preferentially absorbed by the hair root, thus damaging the hair follicle and removing the hair.

Who Is a Candidate for LME Hair Removal

LME is specially designed for hair removal in fair-skin types.

Which areas of the Body Can Be Treated With LME Hair Removal?

LME hair removal is safe enough to be used on all body parts including the face, back, underarms, bikini line, legs and arms.

What Can I Expect With The Procedure?

LME hair removal gives a prickly or a light rubber-band snapping sensation. Topical anesthetic cream will be applied to the treated area for one hour prior to treatment. You should plan on wearing clothing that will allow easy access to the area being treated. LME hair removal works best when the hair is 1 to 2 mm in length, so you should have a light shave one day prior to treatment.

No specific care is needed after the treatment. Mild redness after treatment is expected but should not intervene with your daily activities. The treated hair will not fall out until 2 weeks later.

How long does a treatment take?

An upper lip and chin can be done in 5 minutes. Underarms or bikini lines usually take 10-15 minutes. Legs and back will take longer.

How Many Treatments Do I Need?

Hair grows in a cycle that spans 6 to 12 weeks. This is the amount of time that it takes hair to grow from the base of the follicle to the surface of the skin. Because hair does grow in these cycles, only a portion of your hair is being treated in the proper state with each LME treatment.

Initially, it is recommended that you undergo a series of 6 to 10 treatments at 6 to 8 week intervals to treat all the hair. These treatments will be followed up by a period of evaluation to determine how much hair will regrow and how fast the hair will return. This can be followed up with periodic "touch-up" visits.

Is The Procedure Permanent?

Treatment results may vary among patients. However most will achieve at least 80% long-term reduction in the number of hairs regrowing. The treated hair is expected to be very much shorter, finer and paler.
